Actually, now that I think about it, there is no possible way this is a coincidence… hm.

Never posted before, but I was thinking a lot about the TikTok ban and I feel quite confident that I know at least part of the reason why the government is doing this.

Although it was designed to be mind-numbingly thoughtless as a platform (as are all social media platforms made for short-form media), it was quite literally the biggest way that a majority of people got political information. It made it easy to share information with a large amount of people who may not normally be able to (or want to/seek out) political information. This made it incredibly effective at sharing information, rallying people for causes, and keeping people informed about the shit going on in the USA.

It also made it easy to spread misinformation, but that’s another topic.

I find it very funny that this TikTok ban is being rushed so quickly at the start of Trump’s presidency. To destroy the source of information (which has gotten a lot more young people connected on social issues) would mean that that source of connection, information, and knowledge would basically disappear.

Trump has spoken a lot about his “first few days in presidency,” implying that he plans to do a lot very quickly. If the majority of young US citizens are losing their primary source of information just around that time, it’s going to change our response time. It’s going to change how we learn information. And, at least for the first little while until the majority of people settle into a new app, it’s going to mean that a lot of these people that once were able to stay informed with little effort are now going to have to go out of their way to find and read news sources that will report on the smaller things as well.

The USA is soul sucking. If it takes a ton of effort? People won’t do it.

And Trump has said that he will go after news sources as well, so finding anything reliable is going to be miserable for everyone.

So, that’s my theory. It’s going to disrupt the biggest source of news that young US citizens have, and it’s purposefully going to do this at the start of Trumps presidency.

I mean, it’s disappearing on the 19th, and he’s going into office on the 20th. Like… hey now.
