I THINK ABOUT THIS ALL THE TIME!!! the glass coffin trap is supposed to be an allegory for the pit, which in the pit and the pendulum is basically only referred to as the entrance to hell. therefore theres the idea of if strahm had trusted hoffman and got into the coffin he would have been damned. this is one of the main reasons why i firmly believe if he had survived he would have become almost a jigsaw apprentice to catch hoffman, if he entered that coffin he would have damned his soul to hell and become just what he hated.

as well as this, in the novella the pendulum has a motif of rot and disease, this is a lot more of a stretch but i kind of see it as symbolising how seth baxter is like a rot or a plague on society and how unproperly distributed justice is a plague. I MIGHT JUST BE MENTALLY ILL THO LMAO
