September 7, 2005

The night sky was clear, not a single cloud blocking the sparkle of the stars or obstructing the full moon's light as it illuminated the grounds of Split River High. The last of the stragglers from various extracurricular activities exited the school, waving goodbyes to one another as they made their way to their respective destinations. As students and facility left the grounds, there was just one person left. Atop the roof. The moonlight shone on her body as she lay on her back, a dark trail of dried blood under her nose stood out from her paling skin. Her tear-filled eyes batted weakly as she stared at the moon, the only comfort she could find in this moment was its beauty. Her breath shallowed as an inky crimson liquid pooled from underneath her head; she wished the suffocating pressure in her head would stop, she urged her limbs to just listen to her and sit her weak body up. She hoped for a lot now, but she knew that hoping and wishing was useless.

Present Day

The halls of Split River High were bustling as usual with students filing in and out of classrooms filling the halls with chatter and general noise. Four students stood out amongst the masses, wearing outdated clothes, and instead of heading to the main hallways with the other students, the four headed to the gymnasium. The tall male wearing a Letterman jacket dramatically opened the double doors and allowed the following three to enter before him. The group walked up to the circle of chairs and took their respective seats, a few other students in similarly outdated clothes sat with them. A smartly dressed man sat with a smile as he glanced over those in attendance today and with a clap of his hands he stood from his seat.

“Welcome to another beautiful day and another group therapy session!”

Mr. Martin smiled widely at his students around him. He was met with unenthusiastic greetings from some. He sat back in his seat and began the group session, asking the students how they had been and about the projects he had given. After a bit of conversation, Mr. Martin’s eyes landed on the one student he had not been able to get anything from in years, Lilith Rivera. He cleared his throat and scooted forward in his chair as he spoke to the girl.

“So, Lilith, how have you been?”

Martin kept the smile plastered to his face as Lilith glanced up from her hands where she fidgeted with the rings on her fingers. The dark smudged eyeliner and black lipstick along with the piercing glare Lilith was known for would deter anyone from speaking to her, but Mr. Martin made it a point to keep the lone student engaged with the group. Whether that be just getting her to show up or at least answering his questions with a scoff. The group’s eyes had landed on the goth awaiting her answer, would she ignore Mr. Martin? Sneer at him? Lilith smacked her palms against her thighs as she sighed.

          “I’ve…. been, I don’t know? Fine?”

She rolled her eyes at the last word as if she were anything but fine. Martin’s smile grew, this was the longest sentence he had gotten from her.

“That’s great! Anything in particular bring this feeling about?”

He pushed it, Martin knew it the moment Lilith turned her head away from him in annoyance. Wally piped up quickly as he leaned over to nudge Lilith with his hand.

“You said you really liked that song that one guy was listening to earlier today. What was it? Buried Alive by..uh?..Studio Werewolf?”

Lilith scoffed as she corrected him.

“Radio Werewolf. But yeah, I guess that was a positive to my rather mundane day.”

Wally smiled brightly at Lilith as he sat back in his seat, he knew it was a clever idea to “introduce” her to that guy who sat in the bleachers smoking. Lilith stole a glance over at Wally as he took over the conversation and excitedly talked about his day. She couldn’t understand how someone dead for 40 years could be such a ray of fucking sunshine every day. She looked away when she caught Wally’s eye as he finished what he had to say. He had an even dumber smile on his face as he watched as she fiddled with her rosary around her neck. The session dragged on for an hour before Mr. Martin called an end to it. Lilith shot up from her chair and left the gymnasium quickly. She reached for the cafeteria doors when a hand shot out from behind her and opened the door for her. She recognized the scent alone to be Wally, he always smelt like fresh laundry along with a hint of mint.

“I can open a door myself, Wallace.”

She walked past him into the cafeteria when she heard a chuckle behind her.

“Oh, Moose that had to kill that ego a bit.”

Rhonda walked past Wally as well as he huffed.

“You know I hate when you call me that Lilith!”

Wally pouted as Charley patted his back. Lilith shrugged him off as she grabbed a bag of chips and tore them open. She held the bag out to Wally who grabbed a handful and stuffed them into his mouth. The group sat at an empty table as they ate.

“What is everybody doing after this?”

Charley asked as he flipped through the pages of a book he had in his hands. Rhonda shrugged her shoulders and Lilith glanced at the clock on the wall.

“I’m headed to biology; they’re dissecting frogs and cow eyeballs today. Might get to see someone pass out.”

There was a tinge of glee in Lilith’s voice as she spoke, the others weren’t sure if she was excited about the dissections or the possibility of seeing someone pass out. Wally nodded his head in agreement.

“I’ll tag along, was gonna shoot some hoops but eyeball dissection sounds cool.”

Lilith nodded back at him and the pair stood to head to the biology lab. As they walked Lilith hooked her arm around Wally’s waist and tugged him to her. She looked up to him with a sincere look in her eyes.

“I know you hate the name Wallace so I’ll stop using it.”

Wally smiled down at Lilith, he appreciated her taking his feelings to heart, she takes no one's feelings into account when she does things. Lilith smiled back up to him, her hand tapping his waist.

“Feel better? Walrus?”           “Yeah thank—Wait! Walrus? That’s even worse!” Wally guffawed as he pushed her arm from around him, she laughed at him while smacking his arm.

          “Walrus!”
