I just know that the cat king turned off Monty and Edwin's lantern and made a magical lamp appear in the middle of the forest, just so he could show off his shiny coat
I love the trans Monty headcanons
Just the idea of Esther having a male crow, making it into a human girl to presumably go after Charles and Monty just going "I would rather not be a girl tho" and Esther being like "the other one is very clearly gay, so you can do whatever you want, I am not giving you a new body tho."
Pages 02/10
Still got 8 other already sketched pages to go, and this might take a while, so please be patient :)
I think by the time Monty kissed Edwin, Edwin already knew that he loved Charles. In the same that Charles would always go to Hell, they may not be in love or an official romantic relationship, but they do love each other and they are domesticate partners in a technical sense of "living" together. (The only time either Charles or Edwin are in relaxed clothing is when they are alone together.)
And Charles did not reject Edwin. He accepted the love and the notion of Edwin being in love, he just expressed that his reciprocation isn't quite there. He also leaves it open, he doesn't say: No, for good, I will never be in love with you. He says: We have literally forever to figure the rest out.
Monty is a sweet boy, a good character, and one of my favorites, but to imply that their relationship would necessarily work as an endgame relationship is a bit crazy to me.
Edwin is dead, Monty didn't even really want to be human or alive in the state of consciousness where he can experience love. And I don't think love is what was driving Monty, it was infatuation.
Monty had never loved anyone, he didn't even know about it a few days ago, but there's this pretty boy who makes him want to smile and he seems to like him back.
And Edwin, rejecting Monty, was great on Edwin's part. He handled it gently, as gracefully and kindly as he could. Simply, so as not to lead the poor boy on.
So yeah
JOSHUA COLLEY as MONTY Dead Boy Detectives (2024) — Season 01, Episode 06
Esther Finch’s husband was unfaithful. He begged for her mercy before he died, so did the mistress, although she begged differently. Not for herself, but for her baby at home. A bastard, fathered by Esther’s lying husband. By all rights, he should’ve been hers, so she keeps him. A trophy of her descent into magic. Not needing a child, she turns him into a crow and ties his soul to her magic, her new familiar, and she moves deeper into the forest, away from villagers who ask questions.
Once a month, in the few days leading up to the full moon, Esther leaves Monty to do a ritual for her youth. It’s the only time she breaks the spell keeping him in crow form, though she keeps him locked in a tower until she returns, for safety. (he never asks what she does or why she returns smelling faintly of blood)
It’s Monty’s favorite time of the month, when he can stretch, read, and, his favorite, view the stars. Every night he spends staring out his window, taking it in and charting the stars. By the time he’s 15, he’s created full maps and learned to recognize the constellations throughout the year.
Monty understands why Esther keeps him as a crow. She’s his mother, it makes sense she’d want to keep him safe. And that’s why she forces him into crow form. To keep him safe. It’s what she always tells him. It’s to keep him safe.
He always knows before she returns, as her proximity forces his joints to constrict, his body to morph, and his brain to shrink.
He always dreads her coming back.
Until one day a few people around his age come stumbling into the clearing with his tower, not long after Esther’s left for the her trip. They claim to be a detective agency in town, looking for a lost girl, but Monty can’t help.
He wants to. He really wants to. For the missing girl, but also for the incredibly beautiful boy who keeps asking questions. He wants this boy to like him more than anything.
But he’s never left his tower, so how would he know where she is? He wishes he could join them, help them look, but he wouldn’t want his mother to come back to him being gone and worry.
He doesn’t find out what happened to the girl, but Esther returns early, spitting mad and talking about revenge, looking no different than when she left.
But he doesn’t return to crow form this time. Esther has a plan.
Monty deserved sm better :(
Maybe it's just in my neck of woods (Tumblr) but I'm surprised how it's only "cute Monty" all around and not "poor incomprehensibly brutally abused Monty".
Don't get me wrong, absolutely no judgement, I definitely think he's cute and kind (in his own clueless way) and I love our little crow boy.
BUT I haven't seen anything about the absolutely horrific, stomach-turning, beyond-cruel transformations Esther made him go through both times. She literally butchered him and tore him to pieces alive! Every time I think about it I feel myself shying away from remembering, horror gripping my spine.
I guess that's maybe it? It's so horrific that we all collectively decided not to talk about it? I'm really curious.
I fucking love Monty so much. He is actually the cutest thing ever. Like he's just a lil crow boy, he doesn't know what human emotions are. All he knows is shiny things and stars. I just wanna hug him. I've never felt such a visceral love for a character. But I love him, and I think he deserves all the stars.
Istg, I will end myself if he doesn't come back for season 2

There needs to be a catcrow edit to rule 34 by fish in a birdcage, hear me outtttttttt 👌👌👌👌👌✨✨✨✨
I present our favorite handsome little crow stuffed in a boy suit.
@montythehumancrow
i love you fics that have other members of the agency offer Monty their own family names to help him remove his association with Esther. "Monty Green," "Monty Sasaki" what if i cried
(apologies for turning a sweet thing silly, but i can imagine a scenario where Crystal is (lovingly) annoyed by being teased for her elaborate surname and asks Monty to take it so she's not the only one xvsbbdnxnsnskksjdhsn)
can we all take a minute to appreciate Monty for waiting outside the butcher shop for Edwin at an ungodly hour in the morning? He only met Edwin the day before and probably went straight home and made his little astrology chart, and then needed to show Edwin as soon as it was done. The trio was in the Devlin house overnight and they get out just before dawn, so it must have been sooo early in the morning but Monty was already there when they get home, sitting and waiting. All for a chance to speak to Edwin (and I know it was all part of Esther's plan but I also just know that he was sitting on that bench being just soooo excited to see Edwin again)
Guys I'm definitely on time for this, trust me-
Week 1: Putting Up Decorations
This HC thingy is set in an AU where Monty, The Cat King/Thomas and Niko are left at Port Townsend while Edwin, Charles and Crystal return to London. The Case:Dismissed trio.
The Cat King often magics the smallest bit of holiday decor in the cannery for his servants: sparse tinsel, glittery snowballs, and lots of fragile ornaments dangerously hung on Christmas trees. When he adopts Monty off the streets he spots the crow-boy's eyes googling at the glittering ropes of Christmas lights that litter most of the neighborhood houses. He didn't judge Monty and instead mulled over making the cannery look less of a minefield. Plus he wants to entice a certain ghost that has been depressively loitering around Tongue and Tail and stares at him heartbroken.
So Thomas stays up one night and digs around to see what his two 'captives' enjoy. Monty's interetst are distastefully obvious; astrology. He was unsatisfied however and looked a bit deeper and noted that the pretty boy liked shiny things: bracelets, rings and other trinkets. Maybe Thomas will get something like a friendship bracelet for Esther's past familiar. Niko was more difficult to find a gift for. He easily found that she enjoyed yaoi but he had not been able to find what she had and had not read. Plus he has little knowledge on such things (as of now) so he wouldn't know where to start so he spots this small crocheted T. Rex and he magics his own yaoi version(s) of the plush and tracks back home satisfied with himself.
He manages to convince Niko to come to the cannery later that week. And despite easily being able to put up more decorations with a snap of his fingers he invites Monty to go shopping at their local department store. Watching the crow prance through the aisles feverishly emptying things into their cart. He didn't let Monty believe he went soft though, he nitpicked a few of his items, mostly things that looked like rainbow vomit and anything too cute; or things that his cats would immediately shove down their throat. Thomas and Monty make it to the cash register with a cart full of dusty rugs, partially dead flowers, seasonal candles, and a tube of premade cinnamon roll dough.
Monty turns out to be a rather dangerous baker, spilling half the pack of frosting on a cat and somehow in his hair before Thomas can stop him. The cinnamon rolls themselves are for some reason mouth wateringly delicious and it lures the ghost inside. He summons a pot of tea with china cups and keeps an eye on the pile of cinnamon rolls making sure they never truly run out cause fuck they're addictive.
The three murmured, hunched over drinking out of a classy set of tea cups that would normally be in the thousands, and covered by furred blankets Monty couldn't part with so Thomas bought three for this exact situation.
They didn't talk much about anything, avoiding the sour topic of the dead boy detectives that had changed their lives and opting for shoving their mouths with delectable sweets. Monty was the first to start rambling on about useless things and Niko made a few comments about her yaoi sometimes wrapped around that. Thomas sat back as the two calmly bounced back and forth in their conversation and only requested for Niko to stay during the holiday season just until new year's. Niko mulls over it and decides to stay. After all watching Jenny struggle while tearing down her room is only making her feel worse. Plus the cats were very persuasive.
So the three spend their holidays in the cannery enjoying tiny sweet pastries and warm drinks. Hanging garland and wrapping up make-believe presents as if they're close friends and really do want to share time with them. Monty and Thomas curl up next to each other as Niko recounts one of many plots of her yaoi or all three of them wrap up in a blanket and watch Scooby Doo and ignore how teenage detectives ruined their lives. One day however Thomas finally chooses to present the small little gifts he got for the two. Melting when Niko squeals when she spots the tiny plush and his eyes widening as she envelops him in a warm hug. Monty's reaction is a bit more reserved but his eyes sparkle the same mystified when he saw the eye watering christmas lights earlier that winter. He doesn't shrug off the childish gift and instead sincerely thanks Thomas for everything.
Niko, Monty and Thomas spend that night a tad bit familiar with each other, weaving roots in each other's presence and seeing each other as family moreso friends. Even if it was December 29th, four days after Christmas, it seemed like the most magical day of their troublesome years. A holiday belonging to them and only them. They didn't need a group of dead boy detectives and a psychic girl, they just needed each other and life would be brills.
Found this AU (dbda mlp au) and had the immediate thought of what if Monty was a dragon. Like he's this "small", cute manned dragon (or wyvern I've been tossing it around) that Esther bought as an egg and never actually tried to teach him anything so his brain is very stunted. He's practically an oversized cat. Most of the time she uses him for the flame postal service and retrieving items, mostly minimal tasks she can’t spend her precious time on; that and using his feathers as an unlimited supply of quills :3. Plus having a fire breathing dragon is good when heating a cauldron.
Esther most of the time has a spell that keeps some chains looped his snout and chained to something moving to partially muzzle him and keep in a confined area. When Charles and Edwin retrieved Becky Aspen they had the strange feeling like they were being watched and Charles swore he could hear the scraping of metal when he was on the case. Making the house’s atmosphere even more unnerving. After they saved Becky, Esther was like, fuck it, and turned him into a pony to get revenge, gotta lure those kids.
Not the most plausible (?) cause like it changes some of the aspects by a lot, but like some goofy probably crack HC. Anyways have some dragon Monty doodles.
Y’all just to preface I am insane (I mean I am on tumblr so…).
WHAT IF…
When Charles went to find Edwin in hell what if Edwin wasn’t in the room. What if Charles went down to hell and he best friend of some odd 30 years or so wasn’t there and all he saw was he’s best friends body being ripped apart by the spider-baby-demon-thing. That would’ve been devastating but also like what if he got to see Edwin running and getting caught and then torn apart. That’s would also have been devastating but what if. I mean sure I would’ve been sobbing hysterically and all that but like it would’ve been fun (put me in that writers room y’all all be dead, and cry hysterically but it would be fun).
good afternoon i made a thing

Yes this is another post about Dead Boy Detectives okay I’m on a roll.
Simons punishment in Hell is so heartbreaking to me. He has to tear pages out of the book where he put Edwin and his initials and the ‘headmaster’ tells him he can stop when he finishes the whole book, but the book keeps replacing itself. And it hits so emotionally if you have ever had to hide or repress queer emotion. Simon is being punished for simply having emotion and he thinks if he can stop having that emotion (finish tearing out all the pages) all the pain will stop. Being queer isn’t something that just leaves you… it is always there and sometimes it causes you pain because others can’t accept it maybe even you yourself can’t accept it. (Ex. Simon saying Does it have to be torture? Bring the way we are?) Then our boy Edwin who has been trying to deal with the repression he’s had for so long tells him that it’s okay to be queer and if you ever make yourself believe it’s not okay you are making your own hell.
That whole scene was very sad and also happy since Simon ends up accepting himself. I cried about it multiple times (rn is one of those times).
Edwin asking Charles “what’s a handjob?” is my version of what would kill a Victorian child.
