REASONS TO WATCH DEAD BOY DETECTIVES
ALSO! if you follow me on here and somehow haven't watched dead boy detectives yet, I am BEGGING you to do so! we need all the streams we can get to try and save this show. I have no way of repaying you, other than knowing you will be making a mutual very, very happy.
reasons why you should watch it:
Dead Boy Detectives is a wonderfully, unquestionably queer show. Most of the main/reoccurring characters are queer, with the others who aren't being very queer coded.
It feels like old school Supernatural or Buffy but made for today's audience and queer. Add in the mystery/detective aspect and you've got the perfect recreation of SuperWhoLock my friend, all in one show.
Actors/Writers from Supernatural also worked on this. Everyone knows the wonderful Ruth Connell who played Rowena on Supernatural! And Steve Yockey was a writer/producer for some great episodes of Supernatural. There's also everyone's favorite trickster angel, Richard Speight Jr, who directed one of the best episodes of television ever in Dead Boy Detectives called The Case of the Very Long Stairway.
While this show is wonderful for the romantic aspect of it, it is- at it's heart, a show about love and acceptance. Edwin's journey of self-discovery and his queer identity is not one you see every day on TV, but it is done so well! Each one of the characters have such interesting, fully developed arcs that really tie together the fact that they are all just teens who the world would rather forget about, but they won't let it. Not as long as they are around, they will always have someone who remembers them.
Dead Boy Detectives deserves to continue. It deserves to finish telling the story they set out to. It deserves to be remembered.

Found this AU (dbda mlp au) and had the immediate thought of what if Monty was a dragon. Like he's this "small", cute manned dragon (or wyvern I've been tossing it around) that Esther bought as an egg and never actually tried to teach him anything so his brain is very stunted. He's practically an oversized cat. Most of the time she uses him for the flame postal service and retrieving items, mostly minimal tasks she can’t spend her precious time on; that and using his feathers as an unlimited supply of quills :3. Plus having a fire breathing dragon is good when heating a cauldron.
Esther most of the time has a spell that keeps some chains looped his snout and chained to something moving to partially muzzle him and keep in a confined area. When Charles and Edwin retrieved Becky Aspen they had the strange feeling like they were being watched and Charles swore he could hear the scraping of metal when he was on the case. Making the house’s atmosphere even more unnerving. After they saved Becky, Esther was like, fuck it, and turned him into a pony to get revenge, gotta lure those kids.
Not the most plausible (?) cause like it changes some of the aspects by a lot, but like some goofy probably crack HC. Anyways have some dragon Monty doodles.

maybe it's just "guess you're a lot alike, really" and "well, that sounds a lot like you, doesn't it?"
maybe it's just "you know boys can like like each other, right?" and "it is normal, now" and "it's not 1916 anymore" and "it's not 1916, you know"
maybe it's just charles' baseball bat and charles' cricket bat
maybe it's just larry & edwin chatting about queerness on a beach, and niko & edwin chatting about queerness on a beach
maybe it's just charles throwing a smoke bomb at the afterlife demon, and charles throwing a moltov cocktail at an afterlife demon
maybe it's just the lantern passed on in moments of strength and light and love
maybe it's just the FUCKING PARALLELS between dead patrol and the netflix adaptation that make me FERAL

I'm currently watching A Discovery of Witches (good fantasy show, I definitely recommend it) and Matthew Goode (who is playing the vampire Matthew Clairmont, on of the lead in the show) looks so much like a grown up Edwin.
And every time I think about it, i feel bittersweet, because our beloved Edwardian ghost boy never had the chance to grow and age.

It was the All-School Tournament and he took first prize.
Very abbreviated concept, but please consider the classic “Charles gets dosed with a love potion” - but the person the potion latches onto isn’t Edwin, it’s an amateur potioneer with a crush on him and no respect for consent. And it works, fully, Charles is madly in love, sobbing and composing sonnets and proclaiming everlasting devotion and all the rest. He tries to stay with Edwin, but the draw gets too strong as the potion takes hold, and he runs off into the night to meet her.
And then, a few days later, Edwin gets to them, and tries to rescue Charles starting with taking down the potioneer, and the potioneer commands Charles to protect her from Edwin. And Charles freezes, and stares at them both. And then, face covered in tears, slurring apologies, he knocks the potioneer out from behind.
Edwin gives him the antidote, and his eyes slowly clear, coming into sharp focus on Edwin.
“Charles? Are you alright? How do you feel?”
Charles keeps staring, for a bit, eyes fully focused now but brow furrowed, and Edwin gets more concerned, if possible.
“I… I think I feel… I think. No. I don’t think, I’m quite sure. I love you, Edwin. Like, the way you love me. I’m in love with you.”
Edwin lets out a breath like he’s been hit. “Oh.”
He looks back at Charles, hands moving spasmodically through the air, reaching towards Charles and then back again. “I’m so sorry, Charles. I must have failed with the antidote, it must have altered the parameters of the potion instead of ending the effects, I - just give me an hour, I’ll find out went wrong and remedy it, I promise. Don’t worry, I’ll fix it, just - “
Charles surges forward and grabs Edwin’s erratic hands from the air. “No, that’s not what I’m saying! I’m saying - I’m saying that even when the potion was working, and I was madly in love with that bint, I still loved you more. I had to go with her, I couldn’t stop myself, but I still loved you more. And I always have, Edwin, the whole - the whole drunken giddiness or whatever that it did to me, the obsession, it’s nothing to what I’ve always felt for you, I love you so much - so much bigger - than that potion. I love you, Edwin.”
And Edwin looks at him, again, still, eyes wide, hands held clutched in Charles’s, and speaks again, and this time it sounds like a breath let out after having been held for decades. “Oh.”
Time we bring traditional values back, imo. Teach RESPECT and HONOR to this young generation smh...

may I suggest school spirits ? it another ghost/mystery TV shows that takes place in a high school.
The plot is simple: Maddie is transformed as a ghost and is stuck in her highschool along other students and teachers who died her as well. she doesn't remember how she died and with the help of her (living) best friend she tries to solve the mystery of her death.
The second season is still being aired (last episode is out tomorrow!!!). There is good queer rep and a great soundtrack as well. Definitely check I out.
seconding (thirding?) the ask that suggested shifting efforts to uplifting other supernatural/mysterious queer media! if anyone has recs of things that scratch a similar itch, i’d love to see them in the replies! i would personally recommend cemetery boys by aidan thomas to anyone looking for something with dbda vibes

You, dead boy detectives, are the best show I know.
The Cat King is such a good “villain”. He isn’t traditionally evil, but to Edwin he is evil and predatory. We aren’t supposed to like him until the end. He is everything Edwin needs in a villain. The Cat King isn’t ashamed to be queer, different, sexual, everything that Edwin wishes he were not. He represents what his parents and society told him was evil. Being like the Cat King is what got Edwin murdered. Despite being so evil we grow to see him and Edwin kind of bond, especially after Edwin confesses. Accepting the Cat King as a tentative ally shows that Edwin has accepted his queerness as well. This show is chock full of metaphors for being queer and I love it.

it would be so funny if in season 2 (let me be delusional okay) during flashback of edwin and charles creating the Agency, we would get a scene where Charles is testing his magic backpack and makes a Mary Poppins references and start fucking singing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. And Edwin being super confused in the background because the language nerd he is is trying to understand what Charles just said.
