Anyone else listen to “see I’m smiling” and think of civil war-stony?
Specifically in which Steve had feelings for Bucky in the 40’s but when he woke up from the ice he fell in love with Tony? Even though he still had feelings for Bucky and always would in some way? But then Bucky comes back and he runs off to rescue him, because he can’t move on from the past and it manifests in him desperately needing to save his first love? And Tony’s totally okay with that at first, but it puts a strain on their relationship. After everything, they finally meet up again and Tony just wants to fix things and Steve does to but he’s so blindsided and emotionally invested in helping Bucky that he can’t take the steps to mend his and Tony’s relationship. Which is proven when he has to leave for a Bucky related reason mid way through Tony’s b-day date. Tony tries being understanding but he’s so tired of being placed below Bucky and so tired of Steve (unintentionally or not) being an ass to him that he lashes out?
Yeah me too :)
Tony : I'm so happy, I could kiss you!
Steve : Um...Neat.
*later*
Steve, lying face down on his bed : I said "Neat," Bucky. Who the fuck says neat these days? It's not neat to say neat but I said it anyways because I'm fucking stupid.
Bucky, reading a book : Don't beat yourself up too much, Steve. Everyone gets nervous sometimes. Remember what I did when Sam confessed his love for me?
Steve : Didn't you thank him ?
Bucky : *closes the book and looks at the ceiling* I fucking thanked him.

I love and hate civil war both with a passion.
I mean it's so important to stony within the MCU, without it we'd never have the 'here is my heart' metaphor, when Tony gives it to Steve, we'd never have longing gazes in Endgame, the pain between them, overshadowed by the yearning that you can just feel, the 'you trust me? I do', so I love it, I do. I love the divorce for them, somehow it makes sense that those two would break apart, because that's just who they are. They love each other, but the world comes first, and they love each other but it's complicated, and in the end they will love each other.
I still hate Civil War, too though, because it is also so important to their core relationship. And it broke my heart. I feel like, while in this timeline it wasn't, it could have been prevented.
But it doesn't matter, because they love each other anyway, in whatever way all their shared, complicated history allows them to. As much as they allow each other to, respectively.
Just Civil War.
My favourite Divorce Movie of all time.
something about steve and tony both having a piece of each other to hold onto in the 5 years they spent apart; the shield steve surrendered and the arc reactor tony gave up and it being representative of the most core parts of themselves. something about them reuniting after half a decade and literally getting a part of themselves back when they see each other.
dude omg I was obsessed with these videos
My brain decided to throw back when I discovered Stony 10 years ago, I remember thinking “wow this video is so good!” and started watching all these videos EVERY SINGLE DAY for like a month 💀 [I still remember one with the song “future husband” by Meghan trainor]
at that time I didn’t know about AO3 or Wattpad (tumblr either) so I just assumed that those videos were the only thing about that ship and oh god the obsession I developed 😭
no because ACTUALLY!! it happens so goddamn often and it’s almost never in the tags of the fic either. i hate it when people do that. i mean, sure if you want to bash a character, then do it but at least tag the fic correctly :/
hate when you're reading a stevetony fic and you start to realise that the writer has a not-so-secret disdain for one of them and a can-do-no-wrong attitude about the other.
and i'm not even saying it's usually steve or tony because people do it both ways!!! tf. anyway i'm closing the fic window now
Just realized all these years later as I scrolled down memory lane that @mirthandstar never posted their truly gorgeous commission they did for me. I hope you're doing well out there. Thank you for my old men, I do infact look at them everyday.
divorced couple energy ship will always be immaculate to me. we hate each other. we've seen each other naked. I know how you take your morning coffee. I will never make you your morning coffee again. get it yourself. here you go, I gave it to you anyway. you disgust me. I will always be somewhat in love with you. I will be yours forever. you're not mine anymore. you will always be mine. fuck you. let's fuck, for old time's sake. did you steal my cd? no, no. keep it.
besides the well-known fact that tony stark's arc reactor literally powered his heart and symbolised his second chance at life, it's been not just alluded to but clearly stated by marvel from the very first iron man film that it represents his heart:
this point is made very clear again when it's used to portray his death:
of course they did this; they're such obvious metaphors that are easy to rely on for beautiful visual storytelling. they undoubtedly were aware of the potential for these scenes and carefully considered them since the beginning.
but you don't really get to use each of these moments more than once if you want them to matter, so they had to choose which one of tony's stories needed to be told through carefully picked parallels.
and who did they use them on?
yup, that's right. steve rogers. steve, who literally ends their painful fight by breaking his heart.
steve, whom tony literally hands his heart and says "here, take this" while he's devastated, disappointed, and at one of the lowest moments of his entire life.
so, platonic, romantic, alterous — the intricacies of his feelings don't even matter. they're only for tony to know.
but what we as an audience know, what we were explicitly told by marvel, is that the feelings tony had for steve were so strong that they were the equivalent of getting his heart actually shattered into pieces, and being reduced to offering your desperate, mourning heart on a platter as a way of saying "take it all, there's nothing left of me that you don't own now".
these were not accidents. we were meant to understand how profound his feelings were. so many things spiraled out of their falling out — the entire universe's faith was at stake as a result. tony was not indifferent to him. his problem was that he felt too much.
tony's achille's heel was always steve rogers, and that will forever be the backbone of the marvel universe.
